The Trip of Nový Jičín - Opava (46 km)

We will set out from Nový Jičín to the destination of our trip, Opava.

Opava is a historical town situated at the junction of the Opava and Moravice Rivers. It is the industrial, cultural and agricultural centre of Czech Silesia. It has an eventful history, which is illustrated by a great number of sights.

The most famous native is most decidedly the writer Petr Bezruč (1867-1958).

The most valuable sight in the town is the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin, built in brick in the Silesian Gothic style.
The oldest sights include the Minorite Cloister and the church of the Holy Ghost, built in the 13th century. The parliamentary hall, the Gothic hall, the winter refectory with the so-called Bezruč’s Reading Room and the Minorite Garden are open to the public.

The houses in Dolní (Lower) Square, Masaryk Avenue, Ostrožná Street, as well as the town tower, so-called Hláska, the current seat of the Municipality of the town of Opava, are also interesting.
Sobek’s and Blücher’s Palaces built in the baroque style in Masaryk Avenue are especially admirable.
The baroque Column Dedicated to the Virgin Mary is also worth mentioning.

In Opava we will also find some specimens of modern architecture, e.g. the monumental building of the department store of Breda, or the building of the former Chamber of Commerce and Trade, or the complex of the Town Swimming Pool.

The Art Nouveau barometer, placed in Dvořák’s Park, is a technical object of interest.
The former Czechoslovak fortifications, dating back to the late 1930s, rank among the unique technical monuments in the area of the town of Opava. Nowadays it is mainly the fortress in Opava - Milostovice, which is open to the public.

Opava is the centre of cultural and social life. In 1814 the oldest museum in the territory of the Czech Republic was founded here; today it is the Silesian Provincial Museum.

In the surroundings of the town several ponds have been built; the so-called Silver Lake serves as a natural swimming pool.

Marked hiking trails as well as marked cycle paths pass through Opava, namely Prajzská Path, Silesian Arterial Road and Amber Path; two of them are long-distance cycle paths.
