The Trip of Nový Jičín - Rusava (56 km)

We will set out from Nový Jičín to the destination of our trip, to the village of Rusava.

The Wallachian village of Rusava is situated in the heart of the Hostýn Hills, the most famous place of which is the hill of Holy Hostýn, the most visited Marian place of pilgrimage in Moravia and the second most memorable place after Velehrad.

Rusava was first mentioned in writing by Prince Jan of Rottál, who issued the foundation charter of the village in the middle of the 17th century. The original inhabitants were Moravian Wallachians; D. Sloboda, an ethnographer and a Protestant minister, was endeavouring to change their hard life. Prominent personalities of the cultural life, such as the writer Fr. Táborský, and the painters Ad. Kašpar, Fr. Ondrušek and L. Schneiderka, took a fancy to the peaceful village with rich and rare flora.
Nowadays the village of Rusava has 600 inhabitants and in the land register of the village there are about 600 holiday houses and 10 bigger recreational facilities open all year round, which offer full service in the field of tourism.

The surrounding hills rise to a height of 400 to 736 m above sea level - the highest is the hill of Holy Hostýn. The peaceful village and its surroundings are suitable for lovers of nature, quiet and sports tourism in the summer as well as winter season; there are excellent conditions for cross-country as well as downhill skiing. Local atmosphere is compared to the atmosphere of the High Tatras and recommended by doctors to asthmatic patients for a stay. The recreational facilities of the village include a natural swimming pool with solar water heating, expanses of water for swimming and fishing, camping sites, a football pitch and a tennis court, and a ski lift with artificial lighting in winter.

The visitors of the village can further visit the hill of Holy Hostýn, the ruins of Křídlo Castle, the cave of Čechřinka, and the village museum.

In the exhibition hall of the museum it is possible to see the visual works by the following painters - A. Kašpar, J. Kobzáň, F. Ondrůška, L. Schneiderka, M. Gardavská, S. Stanovský, M. Makovská.
Another part of the museum is devoted to folk culture and art: it presents instruments for home production and processing of textile, the art of embroidery, Wallachian folk costumes, pictures painted on glass, wooden household furnishings, agricultural tools, and other timber products which were part of the life of the people in Rusava.
Rusava Museum - the memorial of the village tries to present the image of the village history and culture to the public. The exhibits are placed in the building of the Municipality.
